St Andrew’s College students on path to adulthood Year 10 St Andrew’s College students got out of bed at 5.30am last Thursday to head off to Kairaki Beach for the school’s annual Te Waka ceremony. Students were led at sunrise by their teachers and fellow student Reuben O’Neill on the bagpipes as they began their journey towards adulthood. The traditional Maori calling ceremony ended with each student symbolically throwing childhood behaviour in the form of a stone or shell into the Waimakariri River where it meets the ocean.
Library building to be torn down By Julia Evans THE FATE of the old Bishopdale Library has been sealed and the building will be demolished. Although the Farrington Ave library was not completely written off by the February 22, 2011, earthquake, the damage was significant enough that it was deemed earthquake-prone and not fit for use. It has since been abandoned and boarded up, but does not pose a risk of collapse to nearby buildings or thoroughfares. Last week, city council staff
told the Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board, which approved the demolition, that the building is a liability in terms of security and vandalism. Property consultant manager Angus Smith said it had been broken into and vandalised the night before last Monday’s board meeting. Repairing the building was deemed financially unviable because of a $2 million price tag and further costs to update the facility for a different purpose. A new discussion to plan what

Construction on a new Bishopdale Library site at the adjacent Bishopdale Village Mall is already well under way and is set to finish in the middle of the year. The decision to demolish the old library will be approved by the city council at its meeting on Thursday.

IT’S KIND of been a bit of a slam dunk I’m afraid in regards to city councillor Aaron Keown’s unsuccessful bid to get traffic lights at the Gardiners, Breens and Harewood Rds intersection. On page 4 today, Mayor Lianne Dalziel outlines why Keown did not get the necessary votes to get the improvements through the council. Keown also has his say on the matter in our weekly Soapbox column (page 4). The intersection rates 94th out of 100 medium-risk intersections in the city. So that either means there are a heck of a lot of risky intersections in the city, or there are many other more worthy intersections that need upgrading. Also, a cycle scheme at Jellie Park has been a success, the organisers of it say, and they are looking to roll it out at other recreation centres (page 3). – Barry Clarke

News Cycle scheme a success By Julia Evans A BICYCLE scheme to get people to leave their cars at home has been labelled a success and might soon roll out across the city. City council head of recreation and sport John Filsell said initial data showed the scheme at Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre was fully completed 17 times and partially completed 13 times. There were at least 117 individual visits from people on bicycles in February. The Jellie Park Bike Initiative Project committee was formed by the Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board in May to gather public feedback on ways to combat the parking problem at Jellie Park. “The hope is to free up car parks, create healthy habits and make sure there is community involvement,” project committee chairwoman Bridget Williams said. Extensions to Jellie Park’s car park were voted down by the city council after an overwhelmingly negative response to public consultation. Board chairman David

Repair cafe plan floated SUPPORTING CHEAP transport and teaching repair skills is at the heart of the idea to create a ‘Repair Cafe’ in Halswell. It’s a cafe which is set up for people to take items that don’t work and get them repaired by people in the community, sharing their knowledge on fixing things - while having a cup of coffee. Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn said she had heard of the idea “floating around” and thought something similar could be set up. While it is still just an idea and in the planning stages, the Halswell Menz Shed manager Roger Spicer said it is on board. “We have the venue and potential expertise,” Mr Spicer said. She said it was about showing people how to fix things instead of throwing them away when they broke. “We’re looking at teaching people skills too, so they can fix things themselves,” Ms Horn said. “We have lots of very handy people in the area, we’re looking at who can do what.” Mr Spicer said it was also about helping people who might not be able to afford to get items fixed or can’t afford to buy new ones.

Your Local Views Frustration over intersection snub By Julia Evans MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel has responded to city councillor Aaron Keown’s outrage that his bid to get traffic signals installed at the Gardiners, Breens and Harewood Rds intersection fell over. At last Tuesday’s city council meeting, 10 councillors voted against the money being budgeted for the traffic signals in the draft annual plan. Seven were for it. Cr Keown hit out at those who voted against it on Facebook, posting a photo of the official voting form. He has since added a direct response from Ms Dalziel. She wrote that she was aware that this issue was what Cr Keown had run his election campaign on, but she had told him she would have to vote against it because he did not use the right process. “This particular intersection sits in the list of 100 mediumrisk intersections at number 94. That means the current criteria consider another 93 intersections more risky,” Ms Dalziel wrote. Cr Keown said other city councillors who voted against said it was because the process

was wrong. To qualify for an upgrade, the intersection had to be in the top 10 most dangerous in the city, in terms of accidents, fatalities and injuries, but he hit back and said that was the wrong approach. “We’re just waiting for someone to die there. That’s backwards,” he said. Cr Keown lobbied hard in his re-election campaign for the intersection’s upgrade to improve pedestrian safety and had offered $100 to anyone who could come up with a more dangerous intersection. “It wasn’t even my idea, it’s
the people. People want lights,” he said. All three city councillors who are also on the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board voted to have the intersection included in the budget. Another board member Linda Chen wrote on Facebook that if she could have voted, she would have supported it. Cr Keown said he would not give up, and because the intersection has gone into the draft annual plan as a note, the next step will be when it is released for public comment.
IT WAS a very disappointing end to what had been an engaging annual plan process at council, not having the intersection of Gardiners, Breens and Harewood Rds included. For me, this is where the entire engagement between the public and council falls down. Elected members will hide behind the term ‘process’. I was elected by the people of Harewood, I campaigned on getting this intersection fixed as that’s what the constituents of the ward wanted and therefore voted for. Here is where it all falls down: A democratically elected member with a mandate from the people can just simply not propose an intersection upgrade even if that’s what the people want. You see, the intersection has to rate as ‘dangerous’ and this is measured by crash stats. Most crashes happen out of human era and not the built environment, so crash stats are really pointless when it comes to influ-
encing safety improvements. Surely the best asset and tool we have is the residents, motorists and pedestrians of the area. People will not whinge and complain about every intersection in their area, but when all point to one and say “something better be done about that before someone loses their life”, this needs to be acknowledged. This intersection is currently rated the 94th most dangerous intersection in Christchurch, based on crash stats. What this figure does not tell you is that most of the 93 ahead in crash stats already have lights and the accidents were the fault of human era so it does not compare apples with apples. All is not lost just yet and the people of Christchurch’s north west soon get the chance to submit on the Annual Plan and have the opportunity to tell the council they don’t want much this year, just one intersection improved for the benefit of us all.

Boost to hill broadband delayed By Georgia O’Connor-Harding IT COULD be more than a year until Kennedys Bush has fibre broadband installed. The suburb missed out on Enable Network Ltd’s Halswell upgrade about a year ago. Said an Enable spokesman: “We needed to set a boundary for our original build programme and Glovers Rd was the edge of high-density urban Halswell.” The installation will allow residents to access broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second in their homes. It was announced recently Enable would extend its fibre broadband coverage to four additional areas on the fringe of the city as part of the Government’s ultra-fast broadband extension initiative. High density parts of Kennedys Bush Rd, and the streets off it, as well as some parts of Cashmere Rd will get the upgrade. Hornby is also on the cards with new coverage to reach high density parts of Main South Rd and Marshs Rd. Swapping technology Middleton students on a quest for the great outdoors
to raise money for World Vision By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MIDDLETON GRANGE School students have come up with a flurry of ideas to help raise money for World Vision New Zealand. A group of 30 students between years 10 and 13 attended a World Vision training day last week to think about what they would like to achieve for the charity this year. Students will take part in the traditional 40-hour famine, start a piggy-bank for general
donations, run a mufti day and orange-themed day for Middleton’s primary school pupils. An op-shop for donations will be held at the school’s Easter camp, along with a fundraiser at the Mega Air Trampoline Arena in Hei Hei. The students have even come up with an idea to set up a mock refugee-style camp to give people an idea of what life could be like in places such as Syria. The students began their fundraising by setting up a
barbecue at a school sports day last Tuesday. Projects throughout the year will be headed by year 13 students Micayla Boshoff, Annabelle Jennings, Sam Tan and Benita Jonathan. World Vision co-ordinator and English teacher, Cassie Foster, said the group was aiming to beat their record of $33,077 from last year and raise $35,000. “It is going to be a great year, it is such a good cause as well – a worthwhile thing to do,” she said.

Year 10 students travelled to the Kokiri Lodge last week to use the high ropes and go orienteering and abseiling. The trip was compulsory for year 9 and 10 students, who will travel over in their “whanau” groups various times throughout the year. Year 12 and 13 students also had the opportunity to go on
the adventure, travelling with the younger students as camp leaders. Each camp is run by outdoor instructors. Located near the Arnold River, Kokiri Lodge is owned by Riccarton High and rented throughout the year when vacant. Principal Neil Haywood said some of the students were experiencing an outdoors trip for the first time. “There is a strong focus on building strong teams, leadership skills and selfconfidence,” he said.

Young opera star on Mikado tour
By Julia Evans AT THE drop of a hat Christchurch Boys’ High School choir director Angus Simmons has been thrust into his first national tour with New Zealand Opera. Initially for this season’s performance of Mikado, Simmons had not been cast. In fact, he had only been home from visiting his brother in Germany for two days and had also celebrated his 21st birthday in that 48 hours. It was safe to say the Bryndwr resident was still feeling the effects of jet lag and a hangover when he found out he’d been cast. Simmons got a phone call to say he had a part in the ensemble for Mikado but he had to be in Auckland in three days. He had to be available for four weeks after that to tour the production and somehow, he said, the timing worked out perfectly. He only had two major commitments to work around, the first being his studies at Canterbury University as he would be missing out on two weeks of class. Simmons is also the musical director of the Christchurch Boys’ High School choir, which was a little trickier.

“It turns out one of our days off is Mondays and the choir meets on a Monday. So I fly back to Christchurch every week for that.” Another hurdle he faced was learning the music in such a short space of time which most cast members had been doing
since the start of January. It was a bit of a rush, but fortunately, the music was quite catchy, something you can learn quickly, he said. Simmons has worked with the opera company before but this was his first real opportunity to tour professionally.
“I can’t really put into words how invaluable it’s been.” Mikado runs at the Isaac Theatre Royal for five shows from March 7 to 11 after its Auckland and Wellington dates. Simmons said touring and being in different cities has been great, but one thing he is looking forward to about being home is being able to drive. Later in July, he will be performing in the Christchurch ensemble for Carmen and after that plans to focus on his solo work and university studies.

School tennis teams in nationals By Gordon Findlater FIVE CHRISTCHURCH secondary schools tennis teams have booked their spot in the national teams tournament later this month. Christ’s College (boys), St Margaret’s College (girls) and St Andrew’s College (mixed) were all crowned champions at the South Island secondary schools teams tennis champs, which were held in Timaru over the weekend. Christchurch Boys’ High School and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School have also booked spots at the national tournament after finishing second. The top two teams in the three competitions earned a spot in at the national finals, which will be played in Auckland from March 27-30. St Andrew’s will defend the national title they won last year and look on track to have a good chance of retaining their title. The team of Vera Goesmann, Lily Bray, Megan Moore, Oscar Parkinson, Edward Batt and Erik Goesmann dropped just two matches on their way to the title in Timaru. • More sport page 8

Australian Open possibility for Boys’ High amateur golfers By Gordon Findlater TWO CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School students have the chance to book a spot at the Australian Open in November. Tom Parker and Dominic Brettkelly, both year 13, have been selected in the New Zealand team of four to compete at the Australian Boys’ Amateur Championship in Wollongong in April. “It’s going to be pretty awesome to go there with one of my good mates,” said Parker. Amelia Garvey and Juliana Hung, both from Burnside High School, will also travel to Wollongong to play in the Australian Girls’ Amateur Championship after gaining spots in the Zealand girls’ team. Previous champions of the tournament include Jason Day, Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby, Grant Waite and Robert Allenby. “It’s pretty cool to know that you’re where they were and to see how far they’ve gone, so if you keep doing what you’re doing then you can get there as well,” said Brettkelly. Last year, Daniel Hillier became the just the fourth Kiwi to win the event since its inception in 1982. The win granted him automatic entry into last year’s Australian Open where

close,” said Brettkelly. The strong Canterbury contingent heading across the Tasman will be kept busy with the upcoming New Zealand stroke play championship from March 23-26 in Hastings. Both the Australian boys and girls’ amateur championships are open to players aged under-18 years on the first day of play and is contested over 72-holes stroke play. They take place from April 5-7 in Wollongong. The girls will play Port Kemba, and the boys Wollongong Golf Club.

Big wins at sports awards THE WESTERN area featured some of the big winners at Friday night’s Nexia New Zealand Canterbury Sports Awards. There was double success for the Burnside Bowling Club, which won the Sports Club of the Year award. They also played a large role in last year’s World Bowls Championships, which won the Sports Event of the Year. Burnside played host to the finals of the event. Villa Maria’s first XI hockey team won the Junior Team of the Year. They did the double by winning both the Canterbury and national secondary school titles last year. After a bunch of top five finishes at the national tournament they went on to win this year, the perfect way to send off half a dozen year 13 players who had been with the team since year 9. Middleton Grange student William Stedman won the Young Sportsman of the Year. The 17-year-old won bronze medals in
both of his 400m and 800m event at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics. Fitness centre focuses on members’ health & wellbeing As we all know from what the health professionals tell us, one of the keys to staying healthy throughout our life is being active and exercising regularly. For long-time manager of the Papanui Club’s fitness centre, Eddie Kerrigan, that has always been the focus. “For us, it’s not about mass numbers – it’s about caring about the health and well-being of individual members who exercise here. That’s the key for overall health,” he says. The fully equipped Ignite Fitness is an important feature of the expansive new Papanui Club, which was rebuilt following the earthquakes, and has much more space and is a better design than the former fitness facilities had, Eddie says. However, for him and other staff members, it is the personal communication and interaction with members that is most important. “People have to have the self-motivation to come,” Eddie says, “once here we can guide them towards their goals and encourage them to incorporate exercise into their lifestyle and get into good nutritional habits.” One member who doesn’t need any encouragement to visit Ignite Fitness is the fitness centre’s oldest member, 87-year-old Mavis Mannall. Mavis has been a member of the Papanui club for 26 years, and goes to the fitness centre three times a week,
where she works out on a number of the machines. Her favourite is the rowing machine, but she also uses the treadmill, the bikes and the leg extension and does floor exercises including squats. “I love coming here, everyone is so friendly. It’s like a home away from home,” says Mavis. “It’s got the X factor.” Her fitness regime also includes walking 4kms twice a week and swimming, while in her ‘spare’ time, she is involved with the Red Cross and the Blood Bank. Her grandchildren are also an important part of her life. Mavis is only one of the 13000-plus members who are enjoying the spacious, modern facilities at the newly rebuilt Papanui Club in Sawyers Arms Road, which reopened in early 2016. New Zealand’s largest club, it offers leisure and entertainment facilities for a wide range of age groups across the whole community. The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used.
